In this 15-minute lightning talk, I will present the results of my two-year research project on foreigners in Chinese propaganda. I will answer the questions: Who are the foreigners that write for Chinese state media or produce pro-China videos on YouTube? Why do they do it? And how successful are they?

I am a journalist based in Hong Kong. Over two years, I conducted a large-scale cross-platform data analysis (5 million comments under more than 150.000 YouTube videos) that shows how successful pro-China YouTubers are. I also interviewed 14 foreigners who write for Chinese state media and asked them about their background, how they were recruited and what motivates them.
