2023 - and: Are we any closer to gender equality? More the opposite: "We are moving backwards," states sociologist Jutta Allmendinger. With the Corona pandemic, traditional role distributions returned to society: childcare, home schooling, family caring – the majority of care work was done by women. And in many cases, the post-pandemic situation has remained the same. As if under a magnifying glass, many things that seemed to be on the right track have stagnated, and in some cases have not developed at all: Management positions and high salaries are still mainly the domain of men, while part-time work and parental leave are the domain of women.

"Gender gap" is the most common term for this. Allmendinger identifies four of them: "pay gap," "care gap," "position gap" and "pension gap”. And these are only the gender inequalities: In terms of society in general, there are also various other gaps, ranging from education to wealth. Allmendinger's topic at this year's re:publica is what structures and conditions are needed to close these gaps in society.

Jutta Allmendinger has been president of the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) since 2007. She has been dedicated to the topic of gender equality for 30 years. In her recent book „Es geht nur gemeinsam! Wie wir endlich Geschlechtergerechtigkeit erreichen.” ("It’s only possible together! How we can finally achieve gender justice.") she points out solutions that are needed to achieve this. In 2022, she was chair of the Gender Equality Advisory Council (GEAC) of the German G7 presidency, and in 2021 and 2023 she was/is a GEAC member.

We look forward to exciting food for thought and discussions with Jutta Allmendinger and our community at #rp23.
